Quebec Abstract Artist Sophie A

How would you describe your artistic style?

Contemporary abstract and minimal.

What’s the main inspiration for your art?

Colour and texture.

What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?

As an abstract artist, I aim to create light, casual and colourful artworks that trigger the viewer a visual stimulation and an ethereal feeling of joy. My art is an invitation to discover a beauty that blurs the boundaries between the real world around us and what lies deep within ourselves.

What’s your favorite thing about being an abstract artist?

Being a perfectionist and organized, abstract painting is a liberating exercise for me. When I paint, I only think about my composition, the hues and the texture of the medium. I am always driven by an insatiable desire to create and I paint without imposing limits on myself, escaping the standards of the visible world.

Why abstract art and not other mediums? Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?

I used to paint landscapes when I was a teenager 😉 Now that I am an adult, abstract art allows me to reconnect with my inner child. I rediscover my innocence, my vulnerability and my spontaneity.

What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?

I have a second life as an artist 😉 I have been a wedding photographer for over 13 years now. I love this art form where I can create authentic, emotional and aesthetic images. I am fascinated by the greatness of love and see wedding photography as an opportunity to tell stories.

Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?

I always knew I was an artist. I have always been an art lover. My complementary courses in college were art courses… of course. When I was younger, I drew, I painted, I made jewelry (which I sold, my very beginning as an entrepreneur), and still today, I do photography.

Do you have any favorite quotes?

Yes of course! It is from Agnes Martin: “Artists are intuitive. They wait for inspiration. That’s what art is about, the intuitive, not the intellectual. Art about ideas stimulates ideas, but art that comes from inspiration stimulates feelings of happiness, innocence and beauty. “
