Germany Abstract Artist Susanne Kirsch

How would you describe your artistic style?

I’m a painter of abstract, mostly large format works

What’s the main inspiration for your art?

Artists like Helen Frankenthaler for example, who worked so fearlessly and ignored all the rules. That’s how she created amazing works. That impresses and inspires me deeply.

What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?

With my art I want to surprise people. I want to break through the ordinary and make people think. My goal is to let the viewer of my work see the world in all its facets.

Why abstract art and not other mediums? Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?

I never thought about painting in any other way. Abstract painting is just my world. However, I once created an abstract faces series. But even that is ultimately abstract…

What’s your favourite thing about being an abstract artist?

Working on the painting itself is my favorite thing. I love to put all the things that move me, interest me, in an abstract form on the canvas. I love when the work develops step by step until I decide that it is finished.

What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?

Oh, there are certainly many things… I don’t like to follow any rules, I try to develop my own technique. I love to experiment. It is important to me to use the possibilities of life and to try out new things, to dare and to create.

Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?

I always painted. I intensified painting gradually until I began to work as a freelance artist. In 2017 I begann studying color painting at the Art Academy in Kolbermoor and later in Bad Reichenhall with Professor Jerry Zeniuk and Ingrid Floss. To date, it has somehow been a wild journey with ups and downs and a lot of work. But I don’t want to miss any of it. I’ve had a lot of exhibitions at home and abroad, been published in two international art books, now have numerous clients and am represented in private collections worldwide. At the end of April 2023 my own book „Farben formen, expressiv malen“ will be published and I will lead courses as a docent at the Kunstfabrik in Vienna, Austria from May 2023. I’m very excited where the journey will lead me.

What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?

Definitely try to figure out what you want to express with your art, where you want to go – and then go for it. Don’t get irritated by the world out there, be patient with yourself and do your own thing.

In your opinion, what’s the most important personal characteristic needed to embark on a career as an artist?

I think you need a lot of resilience to get through the numerous challenges.

What do you love most about abstract art?

I love it, preferably on larger canvases, to be able to really let off steam, regardless of any rules, to let myself in again and again on a new journey.

Do you have any favourite quotes?

“Painting is not coloring shapes, but shaping colors“ – Henry Matisse
