Florida Artist Jessica Karam
How would you describe your artistic style?
Intuitive abstract expressionism.
What’s the main inspiration for your art?
In short, curiosity. I’m inspired by absence, by what has yet to be.
What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?
Aside from selling it? Ha….my biggest goal is to evoke emotion and provide pause. I want the viewer to look deeper within the layers and marks and find a connection to the piece.
What’s your favorite thing about being an abstract artist?
Abstract art allows me to create a never-before reality in real-time, with no point of reference. There is freedom in this.
Why abstract art and not other mediums? Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?
Believe it or not, I began as a portrait artist; a far cry from abstraction. Portrait art and realism fed my need to be in control. This ultimately did not serve me well. I leaned into abstract art as a way to cope with my anxiety and post-partum depression. It was a way to “let go” and free myself.
What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?
Art has always been a part of my identity, but I viewed it as a hobby and nothing more. It took me transferring to an out-of-state college with my credits not being accepted, for me to ultimately start from scratch and declare a different major – Art. This was pivotal in my development and I began to realize that art was much more than a “hobby.” Creating is a core attribute of what makes me, me.
What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?
