How would you describe your artistic style?

Modern Cubist abstracts.

What’s the main inspiration for your art?

Human interactions, emotions, moods, feelings and associations.

What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?

Though my art, I strive to express the feelings of love, longing and loss. The exploration of our interactions as humans within our self and each other is the primary subject and goal of my pieces. Though my art, I love to express our common threads of humanity and explore how we move together though life with more commonalities than differences.

What’s your favourite thing about being an abstract artist?

My favourite part has to be looking at the positive and negative spaces. Finding things unexpressed, reading between the lines and expressing emotions in a stream of consciousness.

Why abstract art and not other mediums? Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?

In my experience as an artist, abstraction is an extension of reality. It is a paring down, of deconstruction and reconstruction of reality based on our perception, experience and influences.
I love to experiment with abstract expressionism and folk art as well.

If you could describe your art in three words, what would they be?

Mad Men Modern.

What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?

I’m a trained fine artist, I have an MFA in Fine arts with a specialization in visual communication. I also love to write. If I weren’t an artist I would have made writing my career for sure.

Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?

Growing up in Asia, especially in India, art was not considered to be a viable career choice. I had to face a lot of resistance, but I felt like art was my calling and I stubbornly pursued art despite the push back and made it not just a viable choice but a thriving one.
My art journey spans more than 25 years. I’ve been practicing my art, my style and experimenting with media & techniques most of my life. I’ve never been afraid of taking risks as an artist and owning my design voice.

In your opinion, what’s the most important personal characteristic needed to embark on a career as an artist?

I believe having authenticity, patience, perseverance and focusing on growth and learning are important characteristics to have

What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?

I would encourage finding a unique style in your art that makes you stand out. Keep growing, keep experimenting and don’t get too comfortable in just one style. Let it flow but also flow with it.

Do you have any favourite podcasts or books that you love and that have contributed to your journey as an artist?

One of my fav books is Art of Looking Sideways. It is a fabulous book of looking at things from a different perspective and finding art everywhere

What’s your most fulfilling and enjoyable experience as an artist so far?

  • Having a sell out exhibition of my pieces in Paris in 2020
  • Having my artworks be a permanent fixture at restaurant H3 in Montreal
  • Having my artwork be a part of an exhibition in Times Square

Where do you see yourself and your art in 5 years?

I hope to continue pushing my style, my technique and experimenting cross media. I hope to embrace new technologies and continue to build my community and audience that resonate with my art.
I also hope to nurture up and coming artists from diverse backgrounds esp women and bipoc artists.

What do you love most about abstract art?

I love how abstract art is open to interpretation based on our own experiences and life journeys. Abstract art is never boring and changes and evolves as we evolve.

Do you have any favourite quotes?

Art has no rules.
