Vanessa Furgich Quebec Artist

How would you describe your artistic style?

I would best describe my artistic style a good mix of spontaneous and intentional abstraction.

What’s the main inspiration for your art?

That is a good question. Many things contribute to inspire my art, but mainly, I am driven by my feelings, emotions and life experiences. As much as I love interior design and nature, and as much as they spark my curiosity, I feel like creating art is an immersion into my inner world, a dive into introspection.

What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?

The biggest goal I try to achieve with my art is to offer the experience of a lifetime through longevity of abstraction

What’s your favourite thing about being an abstract artist?

I feel like being an abstract artist is very freeing. It’s a way for me to express the rawness of souls in a beautiful way

Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?

I started my art journey by experimenting with both abstraction and portrait. As much as I loved doing whatever was coming to my mind, I started getting attached in a really intimate way to abstraction. It is a safe space with no judgment, no boundaries and no self criticism. The main reason why I chose abstract art is because it is a way of expression that is authentic, unique and straight forward.

If you could describe your art in three words, what would they be?

I would best describe my work as simple, textured with organic shapes

What’s one thing people might not know about your art journey so far?

There are many things that people might not know about me since I am discreet about my personal life. However, here are some facts about me: my former career was as a social worker and I have strong feminist values and beliefs. I believe in women’s work, creativity, power and contribution in all areas of society, as well as in the artistic world. I also happen to have a beautiful daughter by my side every day, with whom I share my art studio. Being a mother pushes me forward in so many ways!

Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?

Being an artist was always a hidden desire for me. While thinking it was innacessible, I learned through life experiences to make space for that part of myself and trust it’s power.

In your opinion, what’s the most important personal characteristic needed to embark on a career as an artist?

I would definitly say personal trust. Many things can be learned with time, but what really drives us further is cherishing and cultivating trust in ourselves and in the value of our work.

What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?

Start! Make art, have fun and take your space.

Do you have any favourite podcasts or books that you love and that have contributed to your journey as an artist?

Listening to podcasts and reading books is something I really enjoy doing, unfortunately, I lack time to do it! I listened to a few which were very interesting, like the Laura Horn Art podcast, Art juice’s podcast by Louise Fletcher and Alice Sheridan, the Art2life podcast by Nicholas Wilton and the thought of Frank B. Beau through his YouTube channel.

What’s your most fulfilling and enjoyable experience as an artist so far?

Since I am in my early days as an artist, every opportunity fills me with joy. I look forward to make more art, get visibility and meet with interesting artists and collectors.

Where do you see yourself and your art in 5 years?

I try to keep an open mind and visualize all sorts of exciting opportunities for the future! I wish that my business flourishes and becomes sustainable by that time!

What do you love most about abstract art?

I love how abstract art has the power of catching the very essence of the artist’s feeling and singularity.

Do you have any favourite quotes?

I could write so many quotes that I love! One that really like is by Julia Cameron and says: The creative process is a process of surrender, not control.
