Pursuing a career as an artist can be as rewarding as it is challenging. We asked Toronto artists that are all at varying stages in their art career what advice they’d give up and coming artists. Toronto Artists Share Their Advice Below

Courtney Senior

“Evolving as an artist requires two things. First, you need to find your artistic style and once you do never stop evolving. Try new techniques, mediums, tools, colours, subjects etc. Always strive to get better. Second, you need to understand the fundamentals of running a business. Take time to develop and deploy various marketing strategies. Commit to a consistent social media plan, build a beautiful website, participate in local art shows and galleries, connect with the artist community, say yes to new opportunities and never stop growing your artist brand”

Lorette C. Luzajic

“Look at as much art as you can. Take a survey course in art history. Learn about art from other cultures. Go to every show that comes to town, even artists you don’t care for. Experiment.”

Elle Bruce

“Art making is a personal and risky business. Be brave, trust yourself and remain persistent. In practical terms; ignore the critics, make art that you love, in the way that only you can make and make it daily.”

Paige Ring

“Create a lot of work. Share it because you want to, and don’t worry about your brand, audience, or marketing (when you first start out, anyway). Stressing about the perfect looking career at the beginning will be limiting. Being an artist is about growth, and that comes from consistent practice above all else. Figure out the other parts once you feel like you’ve grown into your work and process. Oh, and start an email list early.”
