Elisabeth Simon Abstract Artist

What’s the main inspiration for your art?

Creating the unexpected on a blank canvas that will bring me satisfaction, joy, and a sense of accomplishment.

What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?

The obvious answer for me is to create a memorable piece of art that I can be proud to sign my name on. I don’t care how long it takes, or how many times I must rework the painting, the end result must be awe inspiring to myself and hopefully to others who view it.

What’s your favorite thing about being an abstract artist?

My father was an exceptional realistic seascape artist and I always leaned more towards the abstract forms of art. Anything that can be painted realistically can also be painted abstractly- from seascapes to florals. There is so much more interpretation in the abstract. It is truly in the eyes of the beholder.

Why abstract art and not other styles? Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?

In my earlier years, I dabbled in water colors, pencils and pastels. I enjoyed drawing cartoons especially. When I began decorating my home, my style leaned to an abstract and neutral palette of cream, grey, black and brown. After joining various art guilds I learned to expand my color choices and subject matter by painting for various themes assigned to the artists every few months. That taught me so much about mixing colors and the elements of composition. I feel so much more prepared now when I put paint down on canvas.

What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?

During the night I often think about my next project or what I can do to rework a problem area on a canvas that I working on. The quiet of the night allows me to be creative and problem solving.I get up every morning energized with new ideas and begin my painting journey all over again.

Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?

Absolutely not. My college major was German and education. Ii decided to fly for Pan American as a flight attendant, but later turned to elementary special education. That is when art became an important part of my life. After retirement it became my passion!!

In your opinion, what’s the most important characteristic needed to embark on a career as an artist?

Having a career as artist is extremely challenging. There are so many talented adults and children in the world. You must love to create and then you are rewarded with immense satisfaction from your work. Always pull yourself together (like my aunt would say) persevere, and keep on trying and learning.

What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?

Learn as much as you can by painting every day. Research different techniques- try them all until you find the style that suits you.

What’s your most fulfilling and enjoyable experience as an artist so far?

The most fulfilling part of being an artist is when I view my paintings and say- “I did that.” Sometimes I wonder how I was able to get that effect on a canvas. Pure pleasure from my work.

Do you have any favorite quotes?

Yes, Winston Churchill once said; “Success is not final, and failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.”

Anything else you’d like to include?

Every day I learn something new- I currently have a large canvas that I could barely pick up and move, but I was able to create a gorgeous moody brown abstract. My precise nature saw a small area that I thought needed additional work and now the entire painting is literally ruined. I did not know when to stop. I am still learning!!
