What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?
I don’t really pursue a ‘goal’ when I create. I like to just enjoy the moments in the studio. I may have a color palette in mind but my creative flow is based on being free with my movements. Abstract art allows me the freedom to just be.
What’s the main inspiration for your art?
For as long as I can remember creating art was a reflection of my life. A reflection of how I may have been feeling at that moment. I could have been inlove or nostalgic. Also, music in the studio or the beauty outside can definitely play a role in inspiration. Inspiration for me is spontaneous.
What’s your favorite thing about being an abstract artist?
Abstraction for me creates a sense of freedom and meditation. Being one with my body and mind. I am mostly an introvert so I am grateful to have found a medium to translate my voice without having to say a word.
Why did you choose to pursue abstract art and not other styles?
I have been an artist since I could speak. Over the years I have written poetry, drawn portraitures and even started painting in a realism style. It wasn’t until just before Covid I experimented with alcohol inks and pouring mediums that I really enjoyed having no real structure. Which led me to painting in a abstract expressionist style. There is still a foundation of painting but there is so much freedom. However, I do find painting abstractly is much more difficult than having a subject to paint from.
What’s one thing people might not know about you and your art journey so far?
I live with anxiety all my life and being creative has always been my outlet.
Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?
I don’t know if I had always ‘known’ because I have always been an artist. Art and creativity has always been in my life. If you were to ask me if I had ever imagined being a professional artist then my answer would be ‘no’. It was not an acceptable profession to undertake as a first generation immigrant in Canada. I had to be a nurse or an Accountant. It wasn’t until in my 40s I worked towards being a professional artist.
In your opinion, what’s the most important personal characteristic needed for a career as an artist?
I would say stamina. It’s a lot of effort to come into the studio and get into routine. Especially, when you encounter rejection from art submissions or even faced with regular life challenges. You have to be your own motivator and not wait for an inspiration to come to you. It will join you as you create. It also takes alot of energy to network if it does not come naturally so you need to hone it.
What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?
Keep creating and experimenting. Networking is also very important.
What’s your most fulfilling and enjoyable experience as an artist so far?
The most fulfilling is the ability to share my art to the world. The most enjoyable is just having the ability and means to paint.
Where do you see yourself and your art in 5 years?
I hope to be in ‘big’ art shows so I can share my art to a wider audience.
