Always be true to myself as an artist.
What’s your favourite thing about being an abstract artist?
The freedom to express myself completely.
Why abstract art and not other styles?
Years ago when I started painting I used small canvas’s using many different subjects. As I became more experienced the canvas’s got larger and I had more freedom to express myself in my paintings, intuitively I started painting very loose with big strokes in a more abstract style. Also I cannot draw.
What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?
I always wanted to paint, but I never thought I could until I finally picked up a brush in my late thirties.
Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?
From a child I have always been artistic, colour is my passion. I had a small rug hooking business for many years where I designed patterns, dyed the wool and hooked rugs and pillows, colour always at the forefront. Along the way I started painting, taking workshops every so often. Then in 2010 I transitioned to painting full time. I fully committed to being in my studio, painting hundreds of small works. It was such a learning experience for me. I have never looked back.
In your opinion, what’s the most important personal characteristic needed to embark on a career as an artist?
Passion, curiosity, and wanting to make beautiful art.
What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?
Commitment and practice, good art comes from many many hours of dedication. Knowing what inspires you, how to mix paints for those beautiful colours, what tools to use, and why you want to paint. From there every step is a positive one, even when you fail.
Do you have any favorite podcasts or books that you love and that have contributed to your journey as an artist?
Mel Robbins – inspirational speaker, she is not an artist but is full of advice on how to live your best life and get around some of those roadblocks we all have.
What’s your most fulfilling and enjoyable experience as an artist so far?
Being in my studio painting. When I begin thinking about starting a new painting the wheels start turning, colours and shapes are rushing around in my head. I am in love with every aspect of my work. When I am painting there is no other thought, I am engulfed in full on creativity.
What do you love most about abstract art?
Do you have any favourite quotes?
“If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced” – Van Gogh
